Barcelona has once again lost their appeal against the initial denial of their request to extend Dani Olmo’s registration. Olmo’s present registration expires on December 31 along with that of teenage attacker Pau Victor, and the club now lacks the funds to renew Olmo’s registration.

Olmo was originally registered through a loophole made available by Andreas Christensen’s injury.

In recent weeks they have been denied by the court in their attempt to circumvent La Liga’s financial regulations.  Several Premier League teams are monitoring Olmo’s contract situation to snap him on a free transfer if he is unable to be registered.

Numerous media have now reported Barcelona’s appeal’s failure, with the court maintaining that the initial decision was legitimate and needed to be upheld.

Barcelona, fortunately, has a different strategy in place. It only requires final approval to sell a portion of the VIP seats at Camp Nou for €120 million over the next 20 years.

It is anticipated that this purchase will provide Barcelona with the necessary finances to sign Olmo and Victor to Hansi Flick’s team for the second half of the season, bringing them back into compliance with La Liga’s 1:1 spending regulations, which allow them to spend €1 for every €1 raised.

Activation of financial lever

The Catalans could hypothetically sign Dani Olmo for the rest of the season if Barcelona and the club agree to a €120 million contract. Eleven years after leaving the academy to pursue first-team prospects, Olmo returned to his boyhood club in a €55 million (£45.6 million) transfer only in the summer.

Barcelona has been embroiled in a continuous struggle with La Liga’s stringent financial regulations, which has left them in a precarious financial condition in recent years. Only in the third week of the season was Hansi Flick allowed to use his new attacking midfielder.

After Andreas Christensen’s injury permitted the club to use 80% of the Dane’s pay to accommodate Olmo, they were able to find space within their allocated salary restrictions. The deadline for such temporary solution was December 31.

In a desperate attempt to give itself more time to acquire the required funds, Barcelona asked the city’s commercial court to extend the deadline, but their request was denied on Friday.

Barcelona seems to have found a last-minute solution as a number of Premier League teams circled Olmo, who would become a free agent in January if no deal was completed by the end of 2024.

Olmo should be able to stay with Barcelona in 2025 thanks to the anticipated nine-figure windfall, which will also provide the team more options in the upcoming transfer windows.
