John Terry is one of so many Chelsea legends to play for the club during a golden period. Remarkably, the retired defender won 15 major trophies with them after coming through the academy.
Chelsea set an incredible defensive record in the Premier League two decades ago that is still currently standing today.
In the 2004/05 campaign, which was Jose Mourinho’s first year at the club, Chelsea only conceded 15 goals en route to winning the division title.
It helped that they had a centre-back partnership of Terry and Ricardo Carvalho, while prime Petr Cech was behind them in goal.
It’s quite telling that this modern day Chelsea side has leaked eight goals in the first seven matches. Speaking recently via Sky Sports, Paul Merson urged Chelsea’s defence to stop playing out from the back so much.
Terry has reflected this week on the historical Chelsea side that set the record for the least goals conceded in a single Premier League season. Interestingly, he’s not sure that any team will ever be able to concede fewer in a 38-game campaign.
